The papers of W.C. Tate, merchant and chairman of the school board in Chalk Level, Va., consist of business records including receipts, accounts, promissory notes, invoices, orders and some correspondence, 1859-1907. Papers generated by his membership on the Staunton River District School Board include annual reports, teachers' contracts, attendance records, accounts and several essays on educational philosophy. The collection also contains a ledger, 1770-1771, and four daybooks, 1854-1858, of D.C. Ragsdale and Company and Ragsdale, Carrington and Company of Pittsylvania Court House (Chatham), Va. The journal of J.H. Carrington, trustee of V. Dickinson, is included in one of the volumes.
